Frequently Asked Questions

What does participation include?

  • set of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literary works (to be mailed prior to workshop)
  • free housing and one meal per day
  • certificate of completion
  • option to purchase 3 graduate credits at in-state rate
  • $300 grant for purchasing East Asian literature for classroom use (upon completion of requirements).

What is the cost of purchasing 3 graduate credits at the in-state rate?

Graduate credits at the in-state rate cost $265.43 per credit hour (i.e. $796.29 total). The course will be listed on your transcript as “Topics in East Asian Studies” E-505, with credit through the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures.

If I choose to take the workshop for credit, will I receive a grade?

Yes, those who take the workshop for credit will be assigned a grade based on the lesson plan submitted (due 5 weeks after close of workshop).

Who is eligible to participate in the workshop?

Practicing U.S. high school teachers are eligible to participate. We do not accept elementary, middle school, or college teachers. Those who are studying to become high school teachers are asked to wait to apply until they are actually practicing in the classroom.

Do you accept teacher of subjects other than English or literature?

While the workshop targets English and world literature teachers, we do make exceptions for teachers of humanities subjects such as history or art who would like to integrate East Asian literature into their curricula.

How much does the workshop cost?

Participants are asked to pay a non-refundable $60 registration fee. They are also responsible for round-trip transportation to Bloomington and roughly two meals per day (breakfasts and at least two dinners will be covered by the workshop).

What is the fee if one cancels after June 20?

The $60 registration fee is non-refundable, regardless of when you cancel. If you were to cancel after June 20, we would ask you to either return or pay for the cost of the reading materials sent in advance (~$180). We would also ask you to pay for lodging costs that we cannot recover – hotel rooms at the Indiana Memorial Union. We have this policy to encourage serious commitment, as the bulk of the workshop costs are covered.

If I am not accepted what will happen to my $60 registration fee?

If you are not accepted, we will either destroy your check or return your check to you, according to your wishes.

If you are not one of the first 25 teachers to apply, we will contact you with the option to be put on the waiting list. If you agree to be on the waiting list, we will keep your check secure and notify you if a spot becomes available. If you accept, we will then cash your check. If no space becomes available by the start of the workshop, we will either destroy your check or return it to you, according to your wishes.

How are participants chosen for the workshop?

We admit participants on a rolling basis; therefore, the first 25 eligible teachers to apply will be accepted.
