Program Abstract: "In a small town somewhere in South China, in a not well defined time, a small family lives in a house nearby the decaying wall. The family is composed of a woman, her husband and her sister in law. The woman, Yuwen, has been married for 8 years to Liyan, a fragile and ill man, whom she does not love. Her only companions are an old servant and her sister in law, whose young age and enthusiasm actually almost disturbs Yuwen and makes her feel even more lonely. One day Zhishen arrives to break the melancholic stagnation of the house. He is a young doctor and an old friend of Liyan and he also used to be involved with Yuwen. Between him and Yuwen a passionate love starts again. Feeling guilty and yet not being able to suffocate her passion, Yuwen is taken by contradictory feelings (a sense of guilt, desire to escape and maybe even a desire to murder...) Her husband Liyan realizes what is going on and decides to kill himself. What Yuwen and Zhishen decide to do in the end is eventually determined by the circumstances to which they, in spite of their love, simply cannot oppose."
