Program Abstract: "The film is a 1930's classic, one of the greatest Chinese movies ever made. The film's cast boasts two of the biggest names on Chinese film history-Zhao Dan, China' leading actor, and Zhou Xuzn, the 'golden voice' whose singing thrilled the audience for decades. The story takes place in the slums of Shanghai in 1935. It describes the life of the people in the lowest class of the society through the freindship among a young street musician and his friends and two unfortunate sisters. The elder sister is forced to be a prostitute while the younger one a tea-house singer. Despite their own dismal condition, the young musician and his friends strive hard to help the two sisters. Director Yuan Muzhi is great in his treatment of the story. He tempers the tragedy with such an optimistic touch that people are full of confidence for the future in spite of the hardship they are suffereing."
