Program Abstract: "'How old are you?' the very old and very deaf granduncle keeps asking. 'Twenty-eight,' replies his grandniece. 'When are you getting married?' follows invariably. Like so many women her age, Noriko tasted independence and responsibility during World War II. Now, more than five years later, persistent legacies of the war remain--newly self-reliant young women and a scarcity of available young men. As these women age, and their prospects diminish, their unmarried status confounds their family. Noriko, in particular, wonders if she will ever meet a man of means who will respect ther intelligence. She refuses to be bullied into giving up her job and marrying just because of her age. Koichi, her older brother, sees her future differently. A marriage arrangement is discussed with a 40-year-old acquaintance. Soon, thereafter, the man's private detective is interviewing neighbors and friends, verifying Noriko's reputation. Will marriage to this unfamiliar man be her inevitable fate? Noriko is determined to resist Koichi's plan for her, whether or not this embarrasses her family. Finally push comes to shove--and all concerned receive a big surprise. The essence of Japanese family life is captured masterfully by director Yasujiro Ozu. Those who wish to know what Japan is really about turn to him for the truth."
