Program Abstract: This video examines the phenomenon that is Japan, and identifies some of the characteristics of the country and its people. Two fundamentals stand out. One is that Japan has virtually no natural resources. The other is that this culturally and racially homogeneous society is founded upon a conformity and group solidarity that remains stable, valuing the traditional while absorbing and adopting without apparent contradiction a constant influx of outside ideas. These aspects of a vigorous and fascinating nation are examined through traditional activities as well as through the family, the company, the entrepreneur, the artist - and more.
