Program Abstract: "Japan 2000" takes a probing look at how the Japanese people view themselves, and how they work to define and deal with their country's leadership role in the global community of the 21st century. When considering U.S.-Japanese relationships, there is a tendency to focus on immediate issues with tunnel vision. The U.S. and Japan are the world's most powerful economies and are a part of the larger emerging global economy. That is the context within which we must view the changing nature of our societies and our readjustments to one another. Boxed together, the two programs are:

Tape 1: View from within.
Takes a look at Japan's changing roles for women; its aging population; and economic restructuring and regional development from the perspective of the Japanese people.

Tape 2: Global perspective.
Provides an engaging view of the Japanese people as they work to understand their country's leadership role in the world. Major political confrontations as well as crowding, pollution, and inflation underline the country's struggles.
