Program Abstract: "[This video] offers a new perspective on the way the Japanese Government and citizens reinvented their post-war society. Until now, this topic has been examined, largely from the U.S. perspective, as a triumph of western democracy over traditional Japanese morals. This program augments this analysis, arguing for a distinctively Japanese evolution that progressed at their pace and often at their preference, with and without the dominating presence of General MacArthur."
