2010 NCTA Study Tour to China

(Tentative dates: June 12 - July 2, 2010)

For middle and high school teachers

The National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) program at the East Asian Studies Center will host a study tour to China in the summer of 2010. This study tour will provide firsthand experience of important cultural, historical, and educational aspects of China. We will visit key cultural landmarks, museums, and other significant sites and may also have the opportunity to visit schools and observe classes. In addition, participants will have time to do their own independent exploration and research.

We hope that participants come away with the information and insights they need to help cultivate a greater understanding of China in their schools and communities.

Eligibility

All applicants must:

Those eligible to apply will be sent an official application in December 2009. Much of the pre-departure information, study materials, and discussion among the participants will be communicated via e-mail and a specially designed study tour Web site, so Internet access will be needed.

Requirements

All applicants are required to:

  • develop a curriculum project prior to the study tour and complete it upon return;
  • attend a two-day orientation meeting at Indiana University Bloomington (May 1-2, 2010);
  • attend a pre-departure orientation in Chicago (June 2010);
  • submit proof of insurance covering travel to China (health insurance coverage must include emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains);
  • participate fully in all required activities of the tour, including reading assignments;
  • attend a two-day follow-up meeting at Indiana University Bloomington (September 11-12, 2010).

Participants will receive a $300 stipend upon completion of all the requirements listed above.

Applications must be received by January 20, 2010.
