318. Tabota'p and Sokkat'ap, Pulguksa Temple

Unified Silla, Mid-eighth century, National Treasure No. 20, Height 10.4m, Kyongju

This pair of granite pagodas is located in front of the main hall at Pulguksa Temple. All four sides of Eabot'ap have steps leading to a main platform on which one, out of the original four, lion sits. The uppermost story consists of eight stamen-like pillars on an upturned lotus. The roof, also octagonal, has a complete finial. Sokkat'apis widely admired for its proportions and simple, yet graceful style. The ratio of the widths of the three stories from the bottom up is 4:3:2, and the width of the lower base is equal to the height of the main structure above the upper base.
