Bronze Standing Buddha with dated inscrip-tion Koguryo, 539A.D, National Treasure No. 119, Height 16.2cm, National Museum of Korea On the back of the mandorla of this statue is a four-column inscription that indicates it was cast during the Yon'ga era of the Koguryo period, making it oldest and most important dated Buddhist image from the Three Kingdoms period. The hand gestures represent abhaya (granting the absence of fear) and varada (granting of wishes). The robe covers both shoulders, reflecting the sixth century style of the Northern Wei Dynasty of China. Click here to return |
