603. Gilt Bronze Buddha Triad with Dated Inscription

Kogurflo, prohably 571 A.D., National Treasure No. 85, Height lS.Scm, Kim Tong-hyon Collection, Seoul

The pedestal of this piece has been lost and the breast dam-aged but it is still a good example of Koguryo era triads and important for the fact that it has an inscription and we knom where it was discovered. The central figure has a high plain usnisa with no curls. The robe covers both shoulders and the hands are in the abhaya and varada gestures. The two attendant figures wear three-sided crowns and have large faces. The inscription indicates this is a depiction of Amitabha Buddha (The Buddha of Infinite Light).
