Buddha at Sokkuram Stone Grotto Unifiecl Silla, Mid-eighth century, National Treasure No. 24, Height 326m Sokkuram is a man made cave-temple built into a slope on Mt. Tohamsan facing the East Sea near Kyongju. According to historical records, Prime Minister Kim Tae-song of Silla supervised the construction of this temple and Pulguksa Temple during the reign of King Kyongdok (r. 742-765). The present stone grotto was reconstructed in the 1C)60s. The main figure is seated in a meditation posture on an octago-nal base. The many figures lining the inside of the cave are oriented toward the main figure as if they were listening to the teachings of the Buddha Click here to return |
