401. Gold Crown

Silla, Fifth-sixth century, From the North Mound of Tomb No. 98, Kyongju, National Treasure No. 19L Height 27.5cm, Diameter of head-band 17cm, KyonRiu National Museum

Three tree-shaped and two antler-shaped uprights decorated with curved pieces of jade project from the headband of this crown. Six thick rings are attached to the lower edge of the headband, three on the left and three on the right of the frontal upright. The tree shapes symbolize the cosmic tree or world tree which sustain the cosmos, and the antler shapes suggest some connection to the concept of sacred deer and the worship of deer in ancient Korea.
