514. Flask

Punch'ong glazed stoneware with incised decoration Choson, 16th century, National Treasure No. 178, Height, 22.(sm. Diameter at mouth 4.5cm, Diameter at foot 8.'.cm, Pak Chun-hyong Collection, Seoul

This is an example of a tall punch'ong flask from the Choson period. Two fish are incised on each of the flattened sides and leaf-like designs are incised on the rounded sides. The entire vessel is slightly asymmetrical and the fins are incised to produce a humorous effect. The foot ring con-tributes to the overall stability of the bottle and suggests that the potter sought to harmonize the apparent casualness of the flask with a balanced form.
