Michael O'Connor

MA student in Chinese

EASC FLAS recipient Michael O'Connor doesn't mess around when it comes to studying China. After receiving his BA at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Michael studied at the Mandarin Training Center at National Taiwan Normal University where he was also a part of the department's boat team for the Dragon Boat Festival. He then moved to Xi'an in the People's Republic of China where he found himself working as an editor at Huawei. In his first year at IU, he used his FLAS Scholarship to study fifth-year Chinese and Literary Chinese and was also elected the department graduate student representative for the GPSO. This year he is serving as an area studies AI for the EALC department -- an experience he finds as rewarding as it is challenging. Michael is currently interested in studying Chinese nationalism, specifically in relation to how nationalistic Chinese intellectuals may view or construct concepts of race, history, and so-called "traditional" culture alongside China's economic rise and newfound confidence in global politics.
