In the next couple of days, we will be mailing a box of study-tour related materials to you. Following is a list of the contents as well as upcoming reading assignments. A few items are backordered and forthcoming. Additional short assignments may be given later.

3. Japan's High Schools, chapters 1-2 (chapter 3 on exams optional)
4. Okinawa: Cold War Island, Part II, Chapter 6: The 1995 Rape Incident (this book is on backorder)
5. Women of Okinawa: Part I (1) Junko Isa and(2) Mitsuko Inafuku; Part III: (7) Mariko Higa and (9) Maiko Sunabe.
6. Also - Professor Robinson would like you to be thinking about any preconceptions you might have of Japanese society and the Japanese educational system.
7. Okinawa: History of an Island People, Chapter 7; Chapter 8 - Undefended Okinawa (pp 354-6), The Formosa Incident (pp 356-360), Tokyo Proclaims Paramount Responsibility for the Ryukyu Kingdom (pp360-5); Chapter 9 - Crisis at Shuri (pp381-4); Chap 10; Chap 11

Reading assignments for later:
1. Hiroshima, by John Hersey. This book should be read by the time we arrive in Hiroshima.
2. Black Rain, by Ibuse. This book should be read by the time we arrive in Hiroshima. (Currently backordered.)
3. Professor Robinson and Mr. Fuqua will announce additional reading assignments at orientation.
4. Miscellaneous short chapters, excerpts from Mary and John Frank, to be announced later.
5. Okinawa: History of an Island People, chapters 2-4

Other books:
For now, please use Shadow Shoguns and your travel guide for reference. Specific assignments made be made in these later. If you have other good reading recommendations for the group, encourage you to send an email to the group email!
