NCTA Seminar on
Teaching about Asia

 

For Teachers, Grades 6-12


The East Asian Studies Center of Indiana University, with the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia, is engaged in a national multi-year program to improve the teaching of East Asia in America's schools. Hundreds of teachers have taken the seminar and remain committed to incorporating East Asia into their curriculum. Three main elements comprise the program: the 10- week/30-hour seminar, classroom implementation, and a follow-up component.

Those who complete the program will receive:
1. solid foundation for teaching about East Asia
2. texts and resources on East Asia ($200 value)
3. option to purchase 3 graduate credits ($796.29)
4. $300 grant to your school for the purchase of East Asian resources
5. $500 personal stipend
6. eligibility to apply for a study tour to East Asia

Cost:
$20 non-refundable registration fee.

Participant commitment:
1. attend all 10 sessions of the seminar and prepare any required assignments
2. complete three lesson plans, one each on China, Korea and Japan
3. implement these lesson plans in the year following the seminar
4. participate in follow up activities and submit a report on how the lessons were implemented
5. continue integrating East Asia into the curriculum wherever possible

Notes: Elementary school teachers will be considered for the program on a case-by-case basis, but are not eligible for any stipends or study tours. Teachers who have participated in the program before are not eligible.
