Title: The Perry Framework and Tactics for Teaching Critical Thinking in Economics

Abstract: The Perry scheme of intellectual and ethical development is a widely used model that describes aspects of cognitive development. The Nelson variant of the Perry scheme highlights the key role of transitions from ne mode of thinking to another and suggests a variety of strategies and tactics for teaching economics in a way that fosters cognitive development. Transitions involve, the recognition of uncertainty in knowledge and thinking, learning the criteria of a discipline for evaluating the validity of competing views, and applying these criteria in the real world. Teaching tactics that facilitate transitions include: mini research projects, summaries and analysis of opposing views in paired reading, debates, and the use of a history of economic thought approach.
