Title: Introductory Economics Textbooks and the Treatment of Issues Relating to Women and Minorities, 1984 and 1991

Abstract: This paper examines sixteen principles of economics textbooks to determine the extent to which these textbooks have improved their treatment of topics relating to race and gender since 1984. This study is a follow-up to the 1987 article that first reported on the textbook treatment of these issues. Focusing on the qualitative dimensions of the textbook discussions, the current study finds that most textbook authors continue to present topics relating to race and gender in stereotypical manner. Suggestions for improvement are discussed and the Guidelines for Recognizing and Avoiding Race and Gender Bias in Economics are included in the appendix./p>
