Title: Interview Scheduling Strategies of New Ph.D. Economists

Abstract: A data set gathered from first-time job seekers at the 1997 American Economic Association meetings is used to estimate the optimal job search strategies for new Ph.D. economists in two submarkets: academic and business/industry. Academic employers seek younger candidates, women, applicants with high GPAs, a completed Ph.D. from a top 19 institution, references from eminent scholars, and candidates with teaching and research credentials. Business/industry employers favor men with a Ph.D. from a top 49 institution.
