Title: Appealing to Good Students in Introductory Economics

Abstract: The effectiveness of different teaching techniques is assessed with a data set that enables the matching of student and instructor characteristics. Devoting a smaller portion of class time to lecture and a larger portion to discussion is found to be effective for all types of students, but the magnitude of the effect varies considerably by type of student.
