CLASS ANNOUNCEMENTS
Work Book Correction: Please turn to page 247 in the work book. For Test Five, the calculation of the sample proportion contains a typo. The formula should read: p (sample proportion) = 135/485 = 0.278351.
Exam Offer: In class on November 11 a special offer was announced with respect to exam scores. If you wish, you may take an alternate exam during the last week of the semester (yes, dead week!) which will cover all the material covered on the last Saturday exam plus Hypothesis Testing. It will have the format of a Saturday Exam.
If you choose to do so, you may take it and the score will replace any exam score already recorded, that means either of the Saturday exams or either of the lab exams. If you replace a Saturday Exam Score, you have a maximum of 100 points possible. If you replace a Lab Exam, the percentage earned on the exam will be multiplied by 75 points to determine how many points you have earned. For example, if you get an 85% on the exam, you will receive 0.85*75=63.75 points in place of the lab exam you wish to replace.
You must decide which exam score you will replace before you take the exam. You will get whatever score you earn on this exam in place of the one you have chosen to replace. It does not matter if the score is better or worse; it will replace the score for the chosen exam. If you choose to take the exam, you will be contacted about your schedule for the last week of the semester so that appropriate times can be found to give the exam.
If you wish to take part in this offer, email me with EXAM OFFER in the subject line, telling me that you wish to participate and which exam score you would like to replace.

Sample Lab Exam F: Questions 2, 3, 4 & 5
Sample Lab Exam G: Questions 1, 2, 3 & 4Exam Room Rules: Adhering to the following guidelines will make the examination process as comfortable as possible for all during all exams.
You may not enter the exam room until asked to by a member of the teaching team.
You must have a valid picture ID or you will not be allowed into the exam room.
If you bring any books, papers, backpacks, etc. into the exam room, you will be asked to deposit them against a designated wall. Please note that students have lost personal property either inadvertently or by stealth from exam rooms.
The only items allowed within your reach during a LAB exam are the exam paper, pencils, erasers and any of your Tool Cards from the Lab Manual Only (Orange Cards).
Only those Tool Card pages which have been divided into the card size will be allowed into the exams. If a proctor observes tool cards still in page form, the proctor will assist you in dividing the cards into the correct size. Any exam time lost will be forfeited.
Tool Cards must be free of any printed or photocopied material other than what is already printed in order to be used on exams. Hand written notes are completely acceptable. Tool Cards not meeting this criterion will be confiscated and the student will be unable to use them on the exam.
ANY talking between students once the exam has begun will be interpreted as cheating and all parties will receive a zero for the exam and fail the course.
Absolutely NO cell phones, beepers or electronic messaging equipment will be allowed into the exam room. Any such equipment found will be interpreted as cheating and the student will receive a zero for the exam and fail the course.
Once a student has left the exam room for ANY reason, that student may not re-enter the exam room.
Students must remain seated during lab exams except to turn in their exam. Once the student stands, the exam must be turned in.
When you have finished an exam, you may leave your seat and turn in your exam ONLY IF YOU CAN DO SO WITHOUT DISTURBING YOUR CLASSMATES.
Lab Manual Correction: On page 92 of the Lab Manual, in the first line, there is a typo. The value of the margin of error function as listed (3.1082) is incorrect. It should be 3.2582, the value that is used in subsequent calculations.
Work Book or Lab Manual Corrections: On page 201 of the work book you are referred to a page containing a flow chart. The correct page number is 207, not 203.
On page 82 of the Lab Manual, three lines above the box at the bottom of the page is a formula for standard error. The formula is correct, however, the calculation of that formula for the particular problem has a typo: the n in the denominator should be 30, not 20. Note, the answer is correct despite this incorrect value.
Exam One Questions Extra Points: Answers: You will find a file of answers for the seven questions which comprised the Exam One deal here. I strongly encourage you to look carefully at my answers. I have purposely made them as complete as I could in response to the errors I saw in some of the submissions. If you do not understand any answer please do not wait to ask about what you do not understand.
Project Part II Due Date Change: Because of the changed exam schedule, the due date for Project Part II is re-scheduled for November 12 or 13, 2009. That is one week later than originally scheduled.
Grade Freeze Scheduled: The Grade Freeze previously postponed will occur on Tuesday, November 3rd at 5:00 PM. At this time, all scores from the beginning of the semester through the lab exam will be frozen AS POSTED unless you have requested a correction. Go to page 15 of the Syllabus for specific instructions about requesting a score correction. The ONLY exception to this freeze is any lab exam score for which a request for the re-evaluation of an answer has been submitted by the due date. See below for details.
Lab Exam Re-evaluation: If you think there is an error in the grading of your lab exam, go to Special Forms on the front page of this site and select Lab Exam Re-Evaluate Form. Follow the instructions. The due date, already filled in on the form, is Friday, November 6 at 5:00 PM.
Workbook Correction: On page 182, parts G and I the phrase (using data analysis tool, then adjusted by multiplying by n/(n-1)) is incorrect. The correct factor multiplied by is (n-1)/n. The answers are correct, but the stated method of getting those answers is not.
And One More . . .: On page 175, the standard deviation quoted in the text (11.81) is incorrect; the correct standard deviation is 12.76 as noted in the diagram.
And One More Time . . .: On page 145 you are referred to Appendix One on page 145. Instead you should be referred to Appendix to Lesson Thirteen on page 153.
Student Questions about Sample Exams: I have had several students ask the same two questions, both about Sample Exam B, one question about Binomials and the other about bin limits.
Problem 2: The key said that the BINOMDIST function had a trial number of 20 instead of 21. I thought we were supposed to include the zero value which pushes the number of trials up one. The number of trials IS 20; what you are counting is the number of values in the sample space; that is what includes the zero.
Problem 1e: I used the upper limit bin ranges of 159.99, 299.99, and so on (to "trick" excel). This changed the answer from what was listed on the key because there is a value of 300 that is included in the next bin as opposed to the previous bin. This is the correct method to use to determine the classes for the distribution. The correct count of the bins should be 5, 19, 16, 8 and so on. The answer as posted is incorrect.
Work Book Clarification: On page 104 you are told that answers to the problem will be found on page 106. They are actually on page 110.
And Another: On page 144 you are directed to page 108 for a table. The table is actually on page 105.
Problem from Lesson 11: You may find the answer to the pork and beef producer's profit question here.
Lab Manual Correction: This is important!! Please turn to page 56 of your lab manual. Find the table at the bottom of the page where it says "Some tricky words" and go to the fourth row of the table. No more than 6 or at most 6 is the same as P(X < 6). The inequality is backwards. Please make this correction.
Workbook Correction: On page 119 at the top you are told that the answer to the problem is on page 117. It is not; it is on page 120.
Correction to Workbook: On page 112, in the middle column of the top table, there is an important typo to which I wish to call your attention. In both the bottom cell and the one immediately above it there are some Xs masquerading as Ys. Please make the following corrections.
For the cell corresponding to a function of 2RVs, aX+bY, when X and Y are independent, the next cell to the right should begin: V[aX + bY] . . .The cell immediately below it has two of the same kind of error: It should be V[aX + bY]=a2V[X] + b2V[Y] + 2abCov(X,Y)
Weekly Review Session: Each Wednesday evening at 8:00 PM, peer tutors hold a free review session in BU407. This is a computer lab. Peer tutors have a briefing immediately before the session to make sure they are up to speed. Give them a try for some help.
Lab Manual Data Files: Your class mates have been busy catching missing files for the lab manual. The following files have been posted to the Lab Manual Data file: Hotdogs.xls, Paint.xlsx and MiddleEast.xlsx.
First Exam Date and Time: Our first exam is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, from 9:30 to 11:00 AM. Additional information will be posted soon.
Corrections to Lab Manual : Typos and other errors in the lab manual are posted as they are found. Check under "Labs and Lab Manual" on the main page to find these. Students who find such things get extra credit if they are the first to report them!
Change in Project Proposal Due Dates: The due dates for the project proposal have been changed because of the change in the date of the first exam. ✧ The draft of the proposal is due 10/08 or 10/09. ✧ The final version of the proposal is due 10/22 or 10/23.
Pre-Lab Quiz, page 21: The pre-Lab Quiz on page 21 of the Lab Manual has two questions that are not clear at all, the 4th and 5th. Please make the following change to each question:
Is the following mathematical statement True or False? Demonstrate.
Oncourse/WarmUps 3 images: I have had reports of some students having difficulty accessing the images in questions 7 and 8 of the current WarmUps, Lesson Three. You will likely have better success with the images using FireFox rather than Internet Explorer, you can copy and paste them into Word and view them or you can look at the .pdf file I have attached here.
Oncourse and Saving Your Work: To my knowledge, Oncourse does not have a "save" function, meaning if you answer a question or two then leave the site, your work is lost. There are two things I think of that you can do. 1) Always submit your work before you exit Oncourse. You will have to copy and paste the answers you have submitted into your final submission, but at least they are not lost. 2) Work on the questions outside of Oncourse, then copy and paste each answer in at one time. If anyone else has another idea, please let me know and I will pass it along.
Oncourse/WarmUps Access: The link on the front page of this web site takes you to the Oncourse login page. Login and select the tab for your E370 lecture section. In the tool list on the left you should see "Original Test and Survey." Select this. You should be at a page which allows you to select a test or survey or to review a test or survey. WarmUps for Lesson Three should be the only test or survey available to select. If you have trouble, let me or your lab coach know.
Oncourse/WarmUps Announcement: Oncourse is having accessibility issues and the first WarmUps assignment may not be available until after 6:00. I will try to make an adjustment in the time due if I think it warranted.
Important Schedule Change: Previously scheduled evening exam dates have been changed to Saturday morning exam dates. The first exam of the semester will be given from 9:30 to 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 3, 2009. The third exam of the semester will be given from 9:30 to 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 7, 2009.
