Junk and Spam Email
|
Here are some options to
reduce junk and spam emails. |
| IU Spam Quarantine Service |
|
You may register for the IU
Spam Quarantine service by logging on to: Use the drop down list to select your email address. The “Send Daily Quarantine” choice will send you an email with the addresses that were blocked. You might want to leave this selected and go through the lists for a while to be sure there is nothing being blocked that should have been delivered. You may come back to this link later and choose NO for the “Send Daily Quarantine” list if you are confident it is behaving properly. The Spam quarantine stops a great many messages, but many of these recent messages are getting through. A possible downside to the Quarantine service is a delay in the delivery of email messages; let me try to explain this. All email delivered is already being scanned, so email that is not caught by the quarantine service will not be affected. What will be affected is email that is quarantined; if an email is improperly quarantined there could be a delay of 24-48 hours depending on how much junk email is being filtered, and of course, you would have to look through the quarantine list to find the email that should have been delivered. Usually the quarantine list is sent out once a day. This is not a perfect solution, but many people use it and many people like it.
Directions and an explanation
of this service are listed on this page. |
| Outlook Email Rules |
|
If you use Outlook you may add a rule to remove the messages with repeating subject lines, or even just repeating words in the subject or body of the message. Most intentional spammers change the spelling on words we would like to stop so this doesn’t work for everything. The recent onslaught of messages in German can be reduced with a filter that looks for the common words used, at least for those of us who don’t write emails in German; I have a filter that can be imported into Outlook if you are interested. If you would like help with Outlook Rules please call or email me. |
| Change the way your Email Address is listed on your web pages |
|
An email address that is typed as username@indiana.edu can be automatically harvested from a web page and used to send spam; this is not the only way email address are obtained, but it is one risk we can reduce. Change the way your email is written to username at indiana.edu ; I put several spaces on both sides of the “at” to help reduced the possibility of this being harvested. Also remove the hyperlink from the email address so it is no longer underlined; in Frontpage you can right click on the underlined area, choose “hyperlink” then “remove hyperlink.” This will require people to type your email address into a message. There are also many commercial anti-spam products, but IU has no license for their use. |
