Step 1:
Get the software and accounts you need
To create and view a basic course homepage you will need:
-
a computer with a network connection and a working WWW browser such as
Netscape or Internet Explorer. If you are reading this document on a computer,
you probably have a network connection and a WWW broswer. You can get browser
software from the IUware CD (available the IU campus bookstore) or from
IUware
Online. Your local computing support provider should be able to help
you set up your computer properly.
-
an account on a computer that acts as a WWW server (i.e., a computer that
other people can access with their browsers). Instructors may request
accounts on the central WWW server at IUB. Some departments have their
own WWW servers, so check with your local computing support provider for
more information.
-
software to create the HTML files (this can be a basic text editor or word
processor or a package developed especially for this purpose)
-
software to move the files from your personal computer to the WWW server
computer. Transmit for the Macintosh is commonly used and you can get "file
transfer protocol" (FTP) packages for Windows computers from IUware. Your
local computing support provider should be able to help you get this software
installed on your computer.
If you wish to create your own graphics, you may need additional software.
