Assignment 2 Checklist

The sequence you turn in must conform to these requirements. Please note that most requirements are explained in more detail on the main Assignment 2 page.

It must use as a starting point either of the two sequences I made available.
It must last at least 1 minute, but no more than 3 minutes.
It must have at least four tracks.
It must show that you've attempted to transform the existing music into something fairly different. You can subvert the mood or "meaning" of the original, providing a kind of musical commentary on it. Or you can reinforce that mood while re-orchestrating the music to shed your own light on it. Use your imagination to come up with something I've never heard before. If it sounds too much like the original, I'll think that you haven't tried hard enough.
That means you'll need to rearrange some of the existing musical material, either moving, copying or omitting sections, or adding new tracks with notes that double an existing track or otherwise complement it. (E.g., you could double a melody using a different sound.) Feel free to delete any tracks you don't want to use.
Your tracks should have different default patches from the original.
If you want, you can make an internal patch change, but this is not required. In other words, a track would change, at some point in the sequence, from its default patch to a new patch.
You must use at least two real-time MIDI effects. (It's okay to use the same effect type, like Echo, on two different tracks.) Make sure you know what the effects do. Don't just turn them on without understanding the changes in sound that they make.
A real-time MIDI effect applies to the total duration of a track. If you want a track to have the effect only some of the time, then use two tracks assigned to the same patch, put the effect on only one of the tracks, and distribute your notes between the tracks. Another solution is to apply the effect destructively to the track, using the Region > MIDI Effects menu. If you do this, supply a track comment telling me what you didi — click in the COMMENT column and type.
You must thoroughly mix your sequence, selecting specific volume and pan settings for every track. Also, you must have changing volume or pan automation in at least three of your tracks. To make this work correctly, you must insert appropriate initial volume and pan controllers at the beginning of those tracks.
You must record or otherwise create some continuous data, in addition to the volume and pan data that you generate with Mixing Board automation. Some examples that make sense for us: joystick up (controller #1), joystick down (#2), effects 1 send (#93), effects 2 send (#91), filter cutoff (#74), filter resonance or HPF cutoff (#71), attack time (#73), release time (#72), pitch bend, monophonic pressure (aftertouch). Obviously, this data should actually have some kind of audible effect. So don't add a bunch of controller messages to a track if the patch you're using doesn't respond audibly to those messages.
You must create at least one tempo change using the Change Tempo command. If you don't like the way it sounds, disable it by choosing Tempo slider from the Tempo Control pop-up. But leave the tempo change in the Conductor track so that I can see that you've tried it.
Give all tracks sensible names, and delete any unused tracks.
You must submit your assignment in such a way that I can find it in your server folder — for example, name it "assign 2 final" and put it in the top level of your server folder. Please put any preliminary or backup versions into a separate, clearly named, folder so that I don't inadvertantly mistake one of them for your final version.
