Advanced Listening Assignment:
Please enter your thoughts on the Week 5 listening logs by Wednesday noon, look at others before class (yes, this is graded pass/flunk). I liked the thoughts of previous logs, but again, please be certain to make the bulk of your entry about what you are hearing, not so much whether you like it or loathed it--that's ok, just do more of the former.

Commission: Francisco López, Quartier Éphémère
Premiere: February 24, 2007, Spatio Lumino — Festival Montréal / Nouvelles musiques 2007, Société des arts technologiques (SAT) (Montréal, Québec)
This is the first installment in a cycle of three pieces: Matério_*, Matério_** et Matério_***. This cycle experiments with “sound” matter (as part of the collective Montreal Sound Matter: Aimé Dontigny, Louis Dufort, Chantal Dumas, Steve Heimbecker, Mathieu Lévesque, Francisco López, Tomas Phillips, Hélène Prévost), approaching sound matter from its organicity. Musically, these pieces experiment with tone, of course, but also with harmony, rhythm, and movement. The harmonic aspect reaches its peak in the third installment, after being foretold at the end of the second one, where acoustic instrumental bodies go through the same manipulations as the sound matter, thus ensuring both dichotomy and symbiosis (even more striking in version 5.1).
In a concert setting, these pieces can be presented separately.

Matério_* was realized in 2006 in the composer’s studio in Montréal and premiered on February 24, 2007 as part of “Spatio Lumino,” the opening concert of the Montréal/Nouvelles musiques Festival at Société des arts technologiques (SAT) in Montréal. The piece was commissioned by Francisco López, in collaboration with Quartier Éphémère in Montréal. My thanks to Esther Bourdages. Matério_* was first recorded in 2006 for the compact disc Montreal Sound Matter / Montréal matière sonore released by Pogus (P 21041-2).

IRCAM Musical Research Residency 2012-13
Call for Projects
For its third edition, IRCAM is inviting composers and artists to submit projects for the 2012—2013 Musical Research Residency program. IRCAM (Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics and Music) offers experimental environments where composers/artists strive to expand their artistic experience, and scientists aim at extending research and technological paradigms for new artistic expressions. The program is open to international artists, regardless of age or nationality, who wish to carry on experimental research using IRCAM's facilities and extensive research environment. Upon nomination, each candidate will be granted a residency at IRCAM during a specific period (three to six months) and in association with a team/project at IRCAM. Laureates receive an equivalent of 1200 Euros per month to cover expenses in France.
Deadline: September 30, 2011
