Nine Unpublished Stories, Essays and Other Worksby
Upton Sinclair / Ruth Clifford Engs, Editor

DESCRIPTION: Nine unpublished short works of Upton Sinclair, written during the early 20th century, range from comedies and satires of suffragettes and health cranks, to more serious short stories and essays. These latter items include the promotion of eugenics, and activities considered controversial in the Progressive era such as trial marriage and artificial insemination for single women. The two major themes of these unpublished works -- women seeking independence and individuals seeking diet and health cures -- are often linked.
A 40 page biography of Sinclair, by the editor, focuses on the time period when these items were written.
REVIEWS
"The editor also adds an enlightening short biography which avoids well known details while providing a helpful sense of perspective." European Journal of American Studies
