Research areas: composition studies, contemporary rhetorical theory and practice, feminist rhetoric, writing and literature pedagogy.
Both my scholarship and curriculum design focus on analysis of how language, visual, and cinematic representations in texts invite us to occupy various positions as readers and rhetors. In my current project, I am investigating issues of rhetorical agency in public confession and performative apology — in literature, popular media, and the classroom.
I also write about the politics of writing instruction and efforts to reconfigure divisions and hierarchies in English studies. In 2010 NCTE published a collection I edited with Kristine Hansen, College Credit for Writing in High School: The "Taking Care of" Business, which explores the complexity of issues involved in the outsourcing of writing instruction to non-college providers. This book won the 2012 WPA Best Book Award from the Council of Writing Program Administrators.
I have served as director of composition as well as associate and acting chair of the English department. I teach courses in writing, rhetoric and composition theory, and literature. I also coordinate the dual-credit college composition course for high school teachers as part of IU's Advance College Project. Currently, on a two-year grant from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, I am directing a professional development project pairing university faculty with secondary English teachers to work on strategies for integrating literary and non-literary texts and teaching critical thinking, reading and writing that will prepare students for college courses.
