BECOMING WHALES: the main body of this lesson (10 pages) as displayed on the website, for easy printout for teacher use. Includes Preparation, Procedure, Resources, and Credits for illustrations.

TEACHING OUTLINE: Choreographs a number of elements in an engaging presentation (following the 5 Es: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate), suitable for any secondary school level.

WHALE HUNT NARRATIVE (new): Shorter version, more suitable for teacher-directed Whale Hunt.

DISCOVERY: WHALES IN TRANSITION: student handout (3 pages), with Background, Narration, and Discussion Questions. Should print one copy per team. If you desire a key (sample responses) to the Discussion Questions, email this request to the Webmaster

WORKSHEET: Teacher-Made, for Student Use; a more structured alternative to the "DISCOVERY" handout.

ORIGIN OF WHALES: more detailed information (11 pages) about whale fossils, in addition to presenting 9 independent lines of evidence, all confirming the evolution of whales. Optional, for extra day of classwork, perhaps have different teams read different parts and share during classwide discussion, or as extra credit for interested students.

WHALES AS MAMMALS: ("WHAT KIND OF CREATURE IS A WHALE?") An overhead outline to facilitate a helpful introduction to the Becoming Whales activity. Derived from the Kiosk activity.

CENOZOIC TIMELINE - COLOR: a ready-to-assemble time scale (5 pages) for the classroom timeline, with the different epochs in contrasting colors.

CENOZOIC TIMELINE - BLACK: a ready-to-assemble time scale (5 pages) for the classroom timeline, with blank vertical bands to be colored in.

EOCENE TIMELINE - COLOR: a ready-to-assemble time scale (2 pages) for the student timelines of the Eocene epoch, with red vertical band to match the Eocene on the classroom timeline.

EOCENE TIMELINE - BLACK: a ready-to-assemble time scale (2 pages) for the student timelines of the Eocene epoch, with blank vertical bands to be colored in.

WHALE LENGTHS: table for overhead projector, so students can make full size strips of adding machine tape to match actual whale lenghts (modern and extinct) to get a realistic sense of relative sizes (optional).

WHALE EVOLUTION DATA TABLE: a blank table for students to fill in as they gather information. For a table with sample responses, contact the Webmaster.
