Education at ALPHA

Undergraduate Students

Projects at ALPHA are accessible to undergraduates through several programs. The largest number of opportunities is available through the Department of Physics at Indiana University. The Applied Physics Program and ALPHA provide practical research experiences and internships. Each summer, faculty and staff at ALPHA sponsor students enrolled in the Research Experience for Undergraduates program, and several summer interns.

Summer Internships

ALPHA employs several interns each summer through either the Applied Physics Program or through self-referral. These students may elect to participate in the seminars, lectures, presentations and activities provided through the REU program, which enhances the experience by including an academic component in addition to the technical experience. Interested students should Contact ALPHA for more information.

Research Experience for Undergraduates

Under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, the ALPHA offers the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). Applications are accepted early each calendar year. Accepted students will receive travel and living expenses as well as summer salary.

Graduate Students

Students interested in applying to graduate school are encouraged to direct their inquiries to the department most closely aligned with their interests. Graduate students from the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology and Psychology as well as from the Schools of Medicine, Optometry, and Informatics have all found research opportunities plentiful at ALPHA.

Accelerator School

The US Particle Accelerator School together with the Indiana University Department of Physics offers an opportunity to earn a Master of Science Degree in Beam Physics and Technology. Interested students may go to the Physics web site and click on "apply now" under the graduate program to apply to the IU/USPAS Master's Degree program. For more information, visit the USPAS site.
