Frequently Asked Questions

How do I request a FIG? Click on Sign Up and then on FIGs Online Request. Use your IU username and password to log in and submit your request electronically. The enrollment for the 2008 FIGs will open soon.

How will I be notified of the status of my request?

As soon as we receive your request, the FIGs office will send an email to your Indiana University email account verifying whether you completed the necessary steps to enroll in a FIG.

What are the "necessary steps"?

To enroll in a FIG, you will need to submit the FIGs Online Request, have paid the IU enrollment fee, and have applied for housing.

How will I know if got a FIG I wanted?

Once you have submitted the FIGs Online Request, we will check if the FIG you wanted is still open. We will confirm your enrollment in a FIG via email once you have paid the IU enrollment fee and have applied for housing.

What will this confirmation include?

The confirmation will list the seats in FIGs courses which were reserved for you and information about the residence hall in which you will live. Due to the unique nature of common course experience of FIGs, when you do register, you will be required to register for specific course sections assigned to your FIG. The Assignment Office will then mail you a housing contract which will have to be returned by the specified due date with prepayment.

If I have seats "reserved" for me, does it mean that I am actually "registered" for those classes?

No, "reserved" means that seats in the FIGs classes are set aside for you. You will formally register for the FIGs classes during summer Orientation on the Bloomington campus.

Will I be able to register for other classes in addition to those in a FIG?

Of course. At summer Orientation, you will meet with an academic advisor who will discuss the coursework that would best match your interests and complement the specific FIGs classes and sections that you are required to take. You will then register for the required FIGs courses/sections along with other classes of your choice.

If I am exempt from the English Composition requirement and would like to sign up for a FIG that includes ENG W131/170, what should I do?

Due to the unique nature of the common course experience, students who have completed or are exempt from ENG-W131/170 should not enroll in FIGs #3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 23. You can still sign up for a FIG, but need to select one that does not include ENG-W131/170 as one of the required courses.

If the FIG I listed as my first choice is already full, can I waitlist it?

No. The early bird gets the worm. We would, therefore, recommend that on the FIGs Online Request you list alternative FIGs in addition to your first preference.

What happens if I would like to be in a FIG and my preferred roommate does not? Can we still live together?

Yes, you can if space permits. Fill out the FIGs Online Request and list the name and ID number of your roommate in the area indicated.

Are FIGs located in the smoking or non-smoking areas in residence halls? What are the visitation policies?

IU is a non-smoking campus. Visitation is open - permitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Are all residence halls accessible to students with disabilities?

Not all residence halls are accessible. However, we are prepared to accommodate your request to live in an accessible area while participating in a FIG. Should you have such a request, contact the FIGs ASAP.
