‘Unbelievable’ Ride Along for Nursing Class

Although the cold seems to be unbearable, I have decided that winter is by far my favorite season. With all of the snow we got this Wednesday, the ground looked absolutely beautiful. Too bad it melted by the end of the day!

For my nursing class, I did a ride along with a sheriff's deputy, Stacy, this week. It was unbelievable! When I first got to the station, I had to watch a video about officers being hit by vehicles while making traffic stops. Needless to say, after seeing a few officers get smashed to pieces, I was a little more than scared to go on the ride along. She then took me on a tour of the jail, and showed me the cells and padded rooms, and explained a lot to me about the system. We then headed over to talk to a mother whose son had run away. I was so impressed by Stacy because of the compassion she felt for the family. She explained her own life situations to them, and I could tell that she truly wanted to help them the best that she could.

We then got an emergency call for someone who had hit the back of a semi-trailer. I now have enormous respect for police officers! She was able to dodge traffic at high speed on the wrong side of the highway just to make sure that she was there in enough time to help everyone at the accident. By the time we got to the accident, I think I stomped a hole in the floor where my imaginary break peddle was on the passenger side! Luckily, the man was okay, and no one was seriously injured. What a ride!
