As the end of the term approaches, I'm faced (probably like most other students) with a conflict of interest. There are a zillion project reports/critical reports/analytical reports, deadlines, etc. looming. So I do the "trendy" thing (maybe once again like most other kids on campus) and decide to give up precious hours out of my sleep routine. If my advisors aren’t reading this then I’d rather cry out loud and say, “Spare me and my sleep!”
Anyways, considering Halloween is next week . . . It is important during this time of year not to lose track of the original meaning of the word “holiday”; namely, eating a lot of candies and throwing eggs at people (especially at backyards since it gives you higher chances of attaining optimal trajectory). Aside from that, of course, the decision about what costume one wears is an extremely complicated and personal one, and most often it is beneficial to rely on one's area of expertise in choosing a costume. Therefore, as food for thought, I've thought of some costumes that Ph.D. informatics students may be seen donning over the coming weekend.
For the social informatics enthusiast: Dress up as a bird with another bunch of little birds attached to your left and right. Have each of these birds constantly bump into each another and demonstrate the consequences of violating the rules of cohesion, separation, and alignment in group dynamics.
For the cognitive science enthusiast: Dress up as Herbert Simon with your shirt reading from right to left, “I’m the kind of guy who likes to do these kinds of things.”
For the bioinformatics enthusiast: Torn clothes, one shoe, and a sleepless look. A banner that says “Biologists don't see us as biologists, computer scientists don't see us as computer scientists . . . what on earth are we?”
For the complex systems. enthusiast: You don’t need to dress up as someone. Wear a T-shirt that has a J curve printed with text that reads “Power law: The all-in-one answer.”
Till then,
Happy Halloween everyone!
