This Won't Hurt a Bit

Nov 6, 2005

Currently: thinking of all possible ways to cover the windows in my room. Even with the blinds down it gets darn chilly here.

Okay, so anyone who knows me even vaguely knows I'm a needle phobic. No, it’s not the fear of sewing or knitting, but a fear of syringes.

Recently, the registrar’s office realized a lack of immunization records for me and so decided to hurl angry and threatening e-mails to me. The threat unarguably was a life [read Ph.D. life] threatening one: Not furnishing required medical records would mean barring me from registering for courses in the coming semesters. Of course this made me dart to our local student health center [but not before three days of wanting to run like hell] to get a TB test and updated MMR shots.

The resident nurse was a nice lady . . . until she decided to stick me with the syringe [that’s when she appeared like she had two red horns sticking from her head and was an unwelcome visitor from the land of Satan].

“This’ll just be a little prick [which I registered as a killer punch]”, she told me. Whatever she means by saying “WON’T HURT A BIT” surely doesn’t mean the same in my semantic knowledge base. Oh, and then she politely asked, “Would you like to get the flu shot as well, honey?” “Sure…X (, let’s see, why don’t I stay back for the rest of the day and get other types of shots as well? Maybe, “get-tall-in-one-shot,” “earn-Ph.D.-in-one-shot” kinds.

Oh, I was given a variety of printed band-aids to select from at the end of it . . . Aaargh!!

Somehow I survived the first shot (but not without a painfully listless left arm) and am gearing up for the second one a few weeks from now. The thought of which definitely makes me wish that these syringes were as easy as the candy coated pills prescribed when I was younger.

Idea: Maybe I should put up a few blankets on the windows. It does make me look like a fool, but saves me from dying one of these winter nights!
