Tutoring and Discipline Mentors

Students in Stage 1 of the Flagship Program are partnered with native speakers to promote language growth and development. In this language exchange, Flagship students and their Mandarin speaking Tutors meet on a weekly basis to mutually improve language and cultural competencies with their native-speaking partner.

More advanced Stage 2 students meet twice a week with Discipline Mentors, advanced native-speaking graduate students with expertise related to the Flagship students' own areas of study. The focus of these bi-weekly meetings is to provide students one-on-one exposure to discipline-specific concepts in Mandarin. Discipline mentors assist students in finding relevant articles to their field and further aid students in building vocabulary applicable to their areas of study. Students also prepare short essays on a fortnightly basis for review by their mentor in order to improve Mandarin written aptitude.
