Kevin Chen 陳修平 (profile unavailable)
Mark Gaughan 高迈和 
Mark is an incoming freshman from Naperville, Illinois. Mark intends on studying Environmental Science through the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IU. He hopes eventually to be able to implement the knowledge that he gains from his Environmental Science degree in China, living and working in a country that inspires him. Mark has been learning Chinese since his Freshman year of high school, and this upcoming summer intends to travel to China for the first time to further practice practically using Chinese language. Mark couldn't be more excited to be attending IU, and to be a part of the Chinese Flagship Program. Mark's other interests include reading, cycling, and watching Bollywood movies.
Andrew Geib 葛安迪
Andrew is a junior from Elmhurst, IL. He is majoring in Finance at the Kelley School of Business and minoring in Chinese. He hopes to integrate his passion for Chinese and finance by working in China for a multinational corporation. Andrew started learning Chinese during his freshmen year of high school. This is where he discovered his love for new languages and cultures. In his spare time Andrew enjoys cars, volleyball, music, and spending time with his friends.

William Liao
William is a freshman majoring in Cognitive Science. William's interest in the Chinese language stems from his desire to deepen his connection with his own heritage. In addition to studying the Chinese language, William hopes to further his knowledge in East Asian religion and philosophy. In recent years, William has developed an interest in Chán/Zen, a subset of Mahayana Buddhism that developed in China sometime during the 16h century. After studying the subject for some time, William has developed a deep appreciation for mindfulness practices such as shikantaza (a sitting meditation). William hopes to combine both cognitive science and his interest in mindfulness practices by studying the ways in which such practices influence cognition. Other interests of William's include blogging, poetry, piano, and photography.

Stage 2 Students
Cadence Baugh 包莉思
Cadence is a freshman from Avon, Indiana who is majoring in both Chinese and Journalism. She plans to teach English in China while writing and doing media projects based on her travels. She is fluent in Spanish and knows some Japanese. At a young age she developed a passion for travelling and languages after exploring various regions in South America with her family and through school. The more her passion grew, the more her yearning grew for venturing into new cultures. She enjoys painting, watching movies, and writing in her spare time. She hopes to one day write novels or create artwork that will perhaps inspire people.
Christine Chambers 赵竹婷
Christie is a sophomore from Carbondale, Illinois. She is majoring in Mandarin Chinese and is studying Japanese as well. She hopes to be able to teach English as a second language in China before going for her master's degree. Christie has loved learning other languages for years, but until coming to IU was never able to take classes in any language other than Spanish. Christie also enjoys listening to and playing music, learning about history, reading, writing, sketching, and doing pretty much anything else that lets her use her imagination.
Michael Weiming Chan 陈伟明
Michael is a sophomore from Jeffersonville, Indiana. He is currently studying Information and Process Management at the Kelley School of Business. He hopes to work in both the US and China after graduation. Michael frequently visits family members who live in Shanghai, and he wants to further expand on his Chinese heritage during his college education. In his spare time he enjoys playing tennis, swimming, watching movies, and cooking (especially breakfast foods).
Alex Childs 蔡力
Alex is a freshman from St. Louis, Missouri, majoring in Finance with minors in Chinese and Economics. Upon attending his first Chinese class in high school, Alex knew that learning Chinese was something he wanted to dedicate his life to learning. Alex has been to China twice, one time participating in a foreign exchange program with Nanjing Foreign Language School. In his free time, Alex enjoys listening to music, working out, and studying the stock market.
Jenna Degner-Lopez 珍娜
Jenna is a freshman from Northern Virginia in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area. She is majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures with a focus in Chinese. After completing Chinese 1-4 and AP Chinese in high school she traveled to China twice, including once on her own after junior year. Jenna is a Mexican American who loves the Chinese language, characters, and culture, and she is excited to expand her knowledge and proficiency through the Flagship program. Jenna is very interested in international relations and wants to travel as much as possible in the next four years. In the future she hopes to use her language skills in a career in foreign diplomacy. Jenna is an accomplished swimmer and runner and enjoys watching movies and making cupcakes.
Alec Eckert 安力
Alec is a senior majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures with a focus in Chinese, and Psychology. Alex intends to pursue a Masters in Industrial Psychology after his undergraduate degree. He hopes to work in both China and the US, possibly for the US government. Alec spent his summer abroad in Taiwan studying Chinese at National Taiwan University, and traveling the Island. In his spare time he enjoys playing guitar, rock-climbing, hiking and eating Chinese food.
Steven Gilbert 古世文
Steven is a freshman from Pleasanton, California. He is currently majoring in Business and hopes to work both in China and the United States. He realized his love for languages after a six week volunteer trip to Panama and decided to take up Chinese once in college. He loves traveling and cultures and hopes to go to as many different countries as he can. In his free time he likes to play soccer, watch movies, listen to music, and hang with friends.
Madeline Hanley 韩玫
Madeline is a sophomore at IU majoring in Chinese and Fashion Design. During her junior year of high school, Madeline moved to Hong Kong, where she developed a passion for Chinese culture—karaoke, food, fashion, and Hong Kong’s national pastime of shopping. She commenced her study of Mandarin in the summer of 2010 at the Flagship Chinese Institute at IU. In her free time, Madeline enjoys running, designing clothes, exploring Bloomington's local music scene, traveling, speaking French, and using her Mandarin skills on the mainland to bargain when she’s in Shenzhen. Whether she ends up catering to the fashion palates of China or sourcing textiles for US companies, Mandarin is an integral part of Madeline’s future.
Betty He 何瑞莲
Betty is a junior from Indianapolis, Indiana who is majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures with a concentration in Chinese and minoring in Tourism Management. Betty hopes to pursue a career where she can put her language skills to use as she can already speak English and some Cantonese. She has studied abroad at National Taiwan University in the summer of 2012, advancing her Chinese language skills while developing a cultural lens of Taiwan. In her spare time, she likes to watch ancient Chinese dramas, play the piano, and read for pleasure.
Stephen Hopkins
A sophomore from Cleveland, Ohio, Stephen began his Chinese studies in 10th grade. Since then, he has solidified his passion for the language and culture of the region by traveling to China three times, including a six month stay with a host family. At Indiana University, Stephen studies Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation, International Business, and East Asian Languages and Cultures with a concentration in Chinese. In the future, Stephen has aspirations of working as a medium to connect American and Chinese businesses through translation and cultural interpretation.
Grace Jaroscak 蔣格蕾
Grace is a sophomore from Chicago, Illinois. She began studying Chinese as a freshman in high school. In addition to studying the language during all four years of high school, she participated in the University of Chicago’s STARTALK Summer Language Institute in Chinese and the Chicago Public Schools’ Chinese Summer Language Institute at Shanghai’s East China Normal University. Grace is double majoring in International Studies and East Asian Languages and Cultures with a focus on Chinese. She plans to use her knowledge of Chinese language and culture in future career endeavors.
Evan Kolb
Evan is a sophomore majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures who is also pursuing a business certificate from Indiana University's Liberal Arts and Management Program. Evan's interest in the Chinese language and culture began his freshman year of college when he began to meet many Chinese international students through class and language exchange programs. As someone who has loved learning new languages and cultures his whole life, he quickly realized that learning Chinese would be just the kind of challenge and experience he wanted. Evan plans to use his degree to teach abroad in China after graduation and hopes to be able to find a career there suitable to his language and business skills.
Kevin Koski 孔克凡
Kevin is a junior at Indiana University, majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures. In addition to studying Chinese modern and literary languages, in addition to culture. He is also studying within the Second Language Studies department (acquisition, teaching, etc.), along with a variety of electives, including Japanese. Kevin loves learning about other cultures and wants to see as much of the world as he can in his lifetime. He is currently taking full advantage of the many opportunities studying at IU provides. Recently back from studying in Taiwan, he is inspired to travel and learn more about the world around him. Some of his hobbies include reading, film, music, and martial arts.
Bohuie Esther Lee 李寳輝
Esther is currently freshman and am pursuing Biology B.S. major and Pre-med minor. She is interested in becoming an Oriental Medicine doctor, and is hoping to study the profession in China, hopefully in Beijing, for a more exclusive exposure to her interest. She was born in Virginia but lived in Bloomington, Indiana most of her life. She is Korean, but has learned Japanese for three years during high school and can speak English. As her hobby, she likes to draw animals and creatures, listen to music, read books, and watch movies and Korean television programs. She also is very enthusiastic about World Cup and soccer in general.
Steve Mackey 麥思凡
Steve is a freshman from Zionsville, Indiana. He is majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures with a focus in Chinese. After his under-graduate career, he hopes to pursue a graduate degree then work as a translator or an interpreter. In his free time Steve likes to listen to music, watching movies, or playing rugby.
Alex Mark 馬語嵐
Alex Mark is a sophomore majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures in Japanese and also studies Chinese and Korean. Alex discovered his love for Japanese and East Asian culture through his high school Japanese class. Once more opportunities to study foreign language were presented in college, Alex decided to pair his Japanese language skills with Chinese and Korean. Alex hopes to travel the world, work as an interpreter, and learn as many languages and live in as many cultures as possible. In his spare time, Alex likes to workout, cook, sing and practice piano, and go out with friends.
Kelly McCarthy 麥楷妮
Kelly is a sophomore from Zionsville, IN, double-majoring in Political Science and Accelerated Mandarin Chinese. She first developed an interest in Chinese after taking beginning level language courses at her high school, and since coming to IU, her love of the language and culture has continued to grow and develop. Kelly has a particular interest in Chinese and American politics, and she hopes to be able to use her language skills in a future career in foreign diplomacy and international law. She is currently a Resident Assistant in the Collins Living Learning Center. When she has the time, Kelly enjoys running, being outside, salsa dancing, and singing along to her ukulele.
Molly Moffitt 莫菲
Molly is a Sophomore from Wolcottville, Indiana. She is a double major student of both Chinese and Psychology. She plans to apply her knowledge of the language to her other field of Psychology, and is interested in possible governmental positions. Molly began to love the language when she was given a “Dao de Jing” by her father at the age of fourteen, and she was curious to find out what the Chinese characters expressed. Molly was given the chance to study two years of Chinese in high school, and has been to China twice. She hopes to learn even more of the language through the Chinese Flagship program. In her spare time, Molly enjoys studying languages, reading, swimming, rock climbing, snow skiing, and watching movies.
Stephanie Price 彭芳
Stephanie is a Junior from Greenwood, Indiana. She is currently double majoring in Chinese and Anthropology. Her interest in Chinese stemmed from her love of Japanese as well as living abroad in Japan and visiting China. In the future, Stephanie hopes to work as either a translator for a museum or in the government, however right now she is setting her sights on studying abroad to improve her grasp and understanding of both Chinese language and culture. When she is not practicing her Chinese, Stephanie enjoys watching movies, listening to music, and going on various adventures.

Maggie Tucker 佟美心
Maggie is a freshman from New Canaan, Connecticut. She is majoring in Chinese and International Studies, and considering minoring in Business. Maggie's interest in China began in high school. After studying Chinese for a year, Maggie went to China and lived in Beijing with a host family for nine months. Maggie hopes to work in China in the future and will hopefully continue Chinese studies in graduate school. In her free time, Maggie likes to run, read, and hike.
William Vuylsteke 威廉
Will is a junior with a language-based scholarship from Army ROTC. He is majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures and minoring in History and International Studies. Upon graduating, he hopes to commission active duty for the Military Intelligence branch. Afterwards, he intends to utilize his language capabilities and work in Hong Kong, where his family now lives. Will is also interested in furthering his Cantonese and Taiwanese speaking abilities. He was born and raised in Taiwan and lived there for sixteen years, and moved to Hong Kong where he graduated from high school. Will is a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and an active participant in IU Hip Hop Connxion, College Mentors for Kids, and Chinese Calligraphy Club.

Eleanor Wannemuehler 王莉诺
Ellie is a sophomore from Fishers, Indiana. She is currently majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures with a concentration in Chinese, and is pursuing a minor in Policy Analysis. Not completely sure about her academic direction, this soon changed after she took Chinese her first semester of college on a whim and fell in love with the language. After college, Ellie plans on working in China for a few years to gain a better grasp on Chinese culture, and perhaps going to law school and working for the State Department at a later date. With designs of working for our government, she is sculpting her academic experience to have a background in both policy and the Chinese language. In her spare time, Ellie enjoys traveling, chatting with friends and family, reading, and hiking.
Shema Wright
Shema Wright is a junior studying at Indiana University and is double majoring in International Studies and East Asian Languages and Cultures. Upon graduating she plans to work in China for a couple of years to further improve her Chinese. Afterwards she wants to go to business school then start her career in China. Her hobbies include reading, writing, and hanging out with friends.
Sarah Zeng 曾祥英
Diversity goes above and beyond ethnicity, language, or country of origin. It is about understanding, respecting, and loving all the differences that set one person apart from another. Sarah Zeng is someone who strives to live by this philosophy of diversity. Often people see her as a diverse person just because although she is of both Chinese and Korean origin, her native languages are English and Spanish. But in her eyes, her individuality stems from other factors. Sarah is an avid fan of euchre, Star Wars Monopoly, and obscure Korean MMORPGs. She deeply values sleeping and eating properly as well as staying close with and taking care of family. But at the beginning and end of the day, her greatest love in life is God.
Capstone Students
George Feldman 费乔治
George was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and attended Broad Ripple High School. He is a Hutton Honors student majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures and plans to graduate in 2013. In his spare time, George enjoys playing the piano, violin, and guitar, playing video-games, practicing calligraphy, watching movies, composing music, and especially playing soccer. He first became interested in Chinese right after he graduated from high school. George wanted to study a new language and Chinese fit the bill quite nicely. Since then, he has also taken an interest in studying the history and culture of China.
Elizabeth Noemi Feliciano 费伊丽 
Elizabeth is a senior double-majoring in Biology and Accelerated Mandarin Chinese, with a minor in Chemistry. Coming from a Hispanic background, Elizabeth became fascinated with languages at a young age, watching Spanish novelas with her grandmother. Along with studying Spanish, she also had the opportunity to study a small amount of Russian. As a child, she also developed an interest in Asian culture. After taking Mandarin Chinese at her high school in Portage, Indiana, her teacher really inspired her to pursue studying Chinese in college. She did just that and has enjoyed every minute of it. After completing her capstone year abroad in Nanjing, Elizabeth will attend medical school. She is interested in Chinese medicine, as well as complementary and alternative medicine. After becoming a practicing doctor, she hopes to research combining Chinese, Western, and different cultural medicines. She also wants to utilize her language skills to connect cultures. In her free time, Elizabeth enjoys making clothes, reading, listening and playing music, backpacking and running. She is currently training for the Chicago marathon and hopes to participate in other marathons around the world.
Regan Ferrell 费柔
Regan Ferrell is a senior double-majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures and Political Science. She has two Chinese brothers and fell in love with China after traveling to Nanjing to meet her youngest brother for the first time. While initially beginning her study of Chinese in college, Regan has taken full advantage of Flagship’s accelerated program and is now back in Nanjing taking classes on poverty in China and teaching Chinese to foreigners in addition to her Flagship coursework. During her time at IU, Regan enjoyed fencing as co-captain of IU’s women sabre team and participating in Campus Crusade for Christ. In Nanjing, Regan is working to experience life outside of the classroom by volunteering at a local animal shelter and nursing home.
Brian Inlow 任伯恩
Brian is a native of Bloomington, Indiana, and is currently a junior at IU. An International Studies major, he is passionate about learning languages, including (but certainly not limited to!) French, Japanese, and Chinese. Brian hopes proficiency in Chinese language will help him in the future to make personal connections with Chinese-speakers and further enhance his knowledge of their culture. Brian has been to China three times, and finds it harder and harder to live without dim sum as days go by. His hobbies include shopping, making pottery, listening to music, and trying to cook good food. He is a student in the Hutton Honors College and a student office assistant at his living-learning community, the Global Village.
Eric Lacour 兰艾克
A 21 year-old from Atlanta, Georgia, Eric is a senior in the Jacobs School of Music, pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Double Bass Performance with Professor Lawrence Hurst. Having an interest in Chinese culture from an early age, but with few opportunities to pursue these interests, Eric began studying Chinese during his sophomore year of college for fun. Two years later, with the help of the Flagship Program and its wonderful teachers, the language and culture of China have become an integral part of his future aspirations. He plans to combine his skills in both music and Chinese to participate in a culturally exciting and flourishing time in China. Eric hopes to be a part of a wider effort that will create connections instead of distance between a rapidly developing China and the United States.
Morgan Rawlings 罗沐耿
Morgan is a junior from Verona, New Jersey. Currently majoring in East Asian Languages and Cultures with an accelerated Chinese concentration, while also working toward a double minor in International Studies and Music, Morgan hopes to pursue a career in International Communications. Morgan is a graduate of The Peddie School, a boarding school in Hightstown, New Jersey, where she studied Chinese for three years. In the summer of 2008, she participated in School Year Abroad's summer intensive Chinese language program, where she lived with a host family in Beijing's Olympic Village. Outside of her love for everything Chinese, Morgan enjoys singing, playing piano, traveling, playing golf, and cooking. Presently, Morgan is an active member of Indiana University's Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, as well as IU’s show choir, The Singing Hoosiers. After going on tour to China with the Singing Hoosiers this past summer, performing for sold-out audiences in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, Morgan returned to Beijing to study with the Princeton in Beijing program for eight weeks.
Zach Richardson 李杰
Zach Richardson is a junior at Indiana University majoring in Supply Chain Management. In addition to his interest in the Chinese language, he also enjoys preparing various Chinese dishes to share with his friends. His other current interests include seasteading, A Song of Ice and Fire, and the free market.
Nathaniel Sims 陈德宁
Nathaniel is a sophomore majoring in Linguistics and Chinese. For the past 12 years Nate has lived in Chengdu, China, where his parents teach English at a university. Through friendships with his public school Chinese classmates, Nate's Chinese language skills developed, and he discovered his interest in studying how languages work. He is especially interested in the unwritten languages spoken by the minority peoples of China. At IU, Nate is currently studying Chinese and Tibetan, in which he is focusing on character writing and learning to use his Chinese abilities to further study linguistics. He enjoys meeting Chinese students at IU and playing basketball or eating hot pot with friends.
Matthew White
Matthew is studying Chinese for many reasons. The biggest reason is because he took Latin in high school and wanted to try a language that was completely different. Another big reason for taking Chinese is the amazing opportunities for working internationally due to increased globalization. Matthew has always been fascinated with China and its culture. His dream job is to be a lawyer or ambassador to China, or the world. His hobbies include playing sports, watching movies, reading books, and relaxing with friends.
