Fred M Duer’s scenic designs range from summer stock for The Monomoy Theatre in Chatham, Massachusetts, to opera for Opera Delaware. His regional theatre credits include; Indiana Repertory Theatre; Colorado Shakespeare Festival; Theatre Aspen; The Studio Arena Theatre; San Francisco’s Marine's Memorial Theatre; The San Diego Repertory Theatre; The Pasadena Playhouse; Burt Reynolds Jupiter Theatre; and Off-Broadway at The Criterion Center. Fred was a resident designer at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego for five years and as a founding member, designed scenery for 11 productions for The Shakespeare Festival/LA over a 22 year period. |
As Production Designer, Fred designed the sets for "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" for 5 seasons, and NBC's "In The House" for 4 years. He has also designed scenery for, "City Guys" and "Saved By The Bell-The New Class". His scenic designs could be seen on Carol Burnett’s “Carol and Company” and the Julie Andrews pilot, “Millie”. His film work includes the TV movie, "Saved By The Bell-Wedding in Las Vegas" and the independent feature, "Fits and Starts". He is the recipient of the Drama-Logue - Los Angeles Critics Scenic Design Award; and was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Art Direction for a Variety or Music Program for his design work on "The Pat Sajak Show", CBS, 1989. |
Fred joined the Indiana University Theatre and Drama faculty in the fall of 2004, as head of the MFA Scenic Design Program. His design work was seen in the IU productions of “The Cherry Orchard”, “The Scarlet Letter”, “Falsettos”, “Urinetown”, “Nine”, and “Hamlet” and Brown County Playhouse’s “Forever Plaid”, “Greater Tuna”, “Smoke on the Mountain”, “Pump Boys and Dinettes”, “SUDS”, “Same Time, Next Year”, “The All Night Strut”, “There Goes the Bride”, and “Present Laughter”. In Bloomington, Indiana, his television art direction can be seen on WTIU’s “The Weekly Special” and “IN Focus”. He was a member of the faculty at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas where he headed their scenic design program. Fred is a member of United Scenic Artist, Local 829
