Graduate Admissions

The Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology offers Masters and PhD degrees in Folklore and/or Ethnomusicology. The department accepts students in both areas for graduate work starting in the Fall semester (September) every year. The Ethnomusicology program also offers minors to graduate students in other graduate degree programs at IU, including cognates for students in the School of Music. The Ethnomusicology program is a part of the University Graduate School.

Deadlines for RECEIPT of Applications and Supporting Documents:

Domestic applications: January 15th of every year
International applications: December 1st of every year

Statement of Purpose describing background information with a clear indication of application to the Ethnomusicology or Folklore Institute and how the specific institute fits in with future goals (2-3 pages single-spaced).
Your statement is regarded as the writing sample. You may, but are not required to, submit an additional writing sample.
Three Letters of Recommendation (Form)
Transcripts from all colleges attended (May be sent directly by the colleges)

If admitted, you will automatically be considered for various graduate assistantships available to first year students in Ethnomusicology and/or Folklore.

Admissions Criteria and Decisions

Applications are evaluated by faculty members on basis of a combination of criteria including academic record, GRE scores (American residents), personal statement, academic background and experience, and letters of recommendation.

Formal education in Western classical music is NOT a requirement for acceptance to the Ethnomusicology program.

Admissions decisions will be made after the completion of both domestic and international application deadlines. Students will be informed about decisions beginning from the middle of March.
