Graduate Studies

With concentrations in Folklore or Ethnomusicology, our program offers comprehensive training in the study of vernacular culture through ethnographic and historical methods and approaches; of the traditional arts and contemporary thoughts of the world's communities; and of the intersections of tradition with the domains of popular culture, politics, commerce, and public policy. We offer MA and PhD degrees as well as a Public Practice Concentration, a dual MA in conjunction with other departments and schools such as Arts Administration and Library and Information Sciences, and a PhD minor. Acceptance into the PhD program requires an MA in Folklore, Ethnomusicology, or a cognate field such as History, English, or Anthropology (among others).
