How are different fish adapted to different environments?
It is important to know what kind of natural environment the fish are used to, in order to create the ecosystem in the aquarium that best suits the needs of the fish. Different fish are adapted to difference in currents, water hardness, pH levels, temperature and acidity levels. Some examples of differences are as follows:

  • River fish have different shape than lake fish because they constantly battle the river currents.
  • Fish that live in the rift lakes, like some of Cichlid species, are used to hard water with a very low acid content.
  • Barbs are used to living in the tropical rain forest rivers need soft and acidic water.
