Kiri Mama

Kiri Mama spent many months preparing for TOEFL test. He desperately wanted to get a good score to enter a university in the U.S. He is the first in his family to finish high school and will be the first to enter college. He had never taken the test on the computer before. All the practice tests he had taken in his village were paper and pencil tests. This was going to be his first time taking the TOEFL on the computer. When he arrived at the test center in the city, Kiri Mama was told that he had to take a compulsory 30 minute tutorial to prepare for the test. He went through the tutorial but he did not pay close attention because he was so nervous and because he felt he already knew what the TOEFL was about after all the practice sessions he had had in the past few months.

Kiri Mama began the test with the Listening Comprehension and the Structure and Written Expression sections. He felt very good at the start of the test and was able to answer easily all the questions. However, as the test progressed, the questions became more and more difficult. Kiri Mama was beginning to feel quite hopeless and felt that he made a lot of mistakes toward the end of those two sections. Kiri Mama went on to complete the Reading Comprehension and Writing sections of the test feeling already defeated.
After the test was over, Kiri Mama met up with his friend, Ravi, who took the same test as well. He knew Ravi's English was not as good as his and Ravi's TOEFL scores were lower than his in the practice sessions. Kiri Mama was sure Ravi was feeling as bad as or even worse than he was. However, to Kiri Mama's surprise, Ravi was quite jubilant. Ravi felt the test was easy overall especially the Listening Comprehension and the Structure and Written Expression sections.
Kiri Mama was quite upset. He did not even bother to check the unofficial TOEFL test scores that were being printed out. He went home alone and sad.
