FRIT honors outstanding students, teachers The Department of French and Italian awarded its annual prizes to outstanding faculty and students. Kathleen O'Connor received the 1999 Cannings Prize. Given annually to an outstanding graduate student in French linguistics, this award honors the late Professor Peter Cannings. The Lander MacClintock Award was given to Ben Peled for excellence in French studies. In 2000, this award will be designated for an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Italian, since it alternates annually. It is named after Lander MacClintock, who taught French and Italian at IU for more than 40 years, essentially establishing Italian studies here. The Grace P. Young Graduate Award was split between two remarkable graduate students in French Literature: Désirée Pries and Babli Sinha. The Grace P. Young Undergraduate Award was bestowed upon Eric March for excellence in French literary studies. Two outstanding undergraduates majoring in French, Nora Phillips and Diana Stock, received the John K. Hyde Award, named after the late professor of French literature and civilization. Kathleen Birth and Catherine Rufatto won the Albert and Agnes Kuersteiner Memorial Prize for excellence in both spoken and written French. This prize was established in memory of Agnes Duncan Kuersteiner, Class of 1907, and her husband, Albert Kuersteiner, professor of French from 1897 until his death in 1917. Jennifer Beyer received the Captain Mario G. Vangeli Award for excellence in undergraduate Italian studies, and the equivalent for graduate studies in Italian was given to Amelia Tundo. During the same ceremony in 1999, several faculty members received the Teaching Excellence Recognition Award from the IU Board of Trustees and the Department of French and Italian. The proud winners were Guillaume Ansart, Laurent Dekydtspotter, Edoardo Lèbano, Emanuel Mickel, and Samuel Rosenberg.
