Remembrance of faculty past
Many alumni have fond memories of Professor John Hyde. Originally from Michigan, where he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, he was an alumnus of the doctoral program at IU. He finished his dissertation, on the poet Benjamin Fondane, while teaching at Oberlin College. After receiving a postdoctoral fellowship from the Andrew Mellon Foundation, he returned to Indiana University to teach 20th-century French literature, serving for several years as the graduate studies advisor. After his death, in 1983, a memorial award was established in his name to recognize outstanding undergraduate students of French. The first John K. Hyde award was given to Alison Lester in 1985. Some may also remember Peter Cannings, a brilliant young scholar of French linguistics. Originally from England, Cannings received his doctorate from the Université d'Aix-en-Provence. He taught theoretical linguistics in the department and was also very active in the general linguistics department. Since 1979, the department has offered a prize in his name in recognition of excellent graduate students in French linguistics or general linguistics. The first award was given to Douglas A. Kibbee in 1979. Alumni wishing to contribute to the Hyde Award or the Canning Prize should send a check made out to the IU Foundation to P.O. Box 500, Bloomington, IN, 47402.
