French & Italian Congratulations to Denise Phillippe! After serving for two years as the department's acting coordinator of first- and second-year French, coincidental with the last two years of a three-year visiting lectureship, Denise E. Phillippe, MA'90, was appointed to the position of coordinator in fall 1998. In this tenure-convertible position, Phillippe coordinates the operations of the first and second levels of French in the department, plays an active role in AI development, works closely with the three visiting lecturers who serve as course supervisors, supervises one course level (currently F100), and organizes new AI orientation. In addition to teaching beginning French, she teaches two courses intended primarily for new AI graduate students, a one-credit practicum and the department's methodology course. "I find it very rewarding to work with AIs who are learning how to teach or refining their skills," says Phillippe, "and we are fortunate in having many talented and dedicated AIs in the department." Phillippe is completing doctoral work in foreign and second language education at Ohio State University. Her dissertation title is "Effect of Exam Context and Directions on Student Performance on Language Achievement Tests." She earned her MA in French linguistics at IU in 1990 and has a BA in French and English, with secondary teaching certification, from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. In November 1998, Phillippe was a co-presenter with Mary Vogl, PhD'98, at ACTFL's annual conference. Their presentation was titled "Portrayal of North Africans in Textbooks." Phillippe frequently presents at the Central States Conference, including sessions on simulations in the language classroom and cultural activities. For 14 years, she has been associated with the Concordia Language Villages, Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., a language immersion and culture education program for children and young people, where she directs one of the summer French programs.
