Domestic Applicants in French
Dear Prospective Student:
Thank you for your interest in our French graduate programs at Indiana University Bloomington. Here you will find listed all of the necessary materials to apply to one of our programs. Please note that no separate application is required to be considered for the financial assistance of an Associate Instructorship (teaching assistantship) or other department fellowship opportunities.
You may now apply online to the desired program by clicking this link: http://www.gradapp.indiana.edu. Select: "Apply Now ", create an account, and then follow the instructions. Please fill in all applicable fields, including the "Departmental Question" where you indicate if you want to be considered for an IU fellowship or assistantship and you select your area of interest for graduate studies.
The application deadline for domestic applicants who would like to enter the program in January is the previous September 1st. For entry into the program in the fall semester, the deadline is the previous January 15th. Please note that AI positions are generally not offered to new students who begin their studies in the spring semester. Such students are welcome to submit their interest for an AI position for the following fall semester.
Successful applicants who hold an MA degree in French from another university will still be admitted first to the MA degree program in the Department. Such students must pass the departmental Masters exam before they can advance to the PhD program. Indiana University graduate courses completed by such a student may, however, count toward the PhD even before the student passes the MA exam.
In order to evaluate your dossier and application, the Graduate Admissions Committee requests that you also:
- Write a 300-500 word statement of purpose. Please submit two versions of the same content, one in French and one in English. It may contain such information as your current goals, plans for your professional career, and reasons for selecting field of study.
- Submit one official transcript from each institute of higher education attended.
- Take the Graduate Record Examination and have the scores sent to us directly by the testing service. While the Graduate School normally requires at least one GRE score above 600, exceptions can be made in cases of particular merit.
- Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your ability to do scholarly work. If you are not currently in school, a letter from a non-academic employer may be included as one of the three letters, but prospective students should be aware that such letters are usually less valuable to the Admissions Committee
- Provide a brief summary of any study or experience abroad. (1-2 pages long, in English or in French.)
- Submit a CD or an audio tape of your spoken French. For details, click here.
- Submit a curriculum vitae or current resumé
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone at (812) 855-1088 or by e-mail at fritgs @indiana.edu. After you have submitted your application, please notify our office immediately of any change to your postal or e-mail address.
