What is the deadline for submitting an application?
For the domestic applicants (U.S. citizens and permanent residents), who would like to enter the program in January, the deadline is the previous September 1st. For entry into the program in the fall (August), the deadline is the previous January 15th.
For the international applicants, who wish to begin their studies in the fall (September), the deadline is December 1st. For those who would like to begin in the spring (January), the deadline is September 1st.
Please note that AI positions are generally not offered to new students who begin their studies in the spring semester. Such students are welcome to apply again for an AI position for the following fall semester.
Do I need to submit a separate application for financial assistance?
No separate application for financial assistance is necessary. Successful applicants will receive in their admission letter the offer of the financial support package. Support typically includes a teaching stipend, full health insurance and a tuition scholarship covering 12 credits in the Fall, 12 in the Spring and 6 in the Summer. For more information, please consult our Financial Support page.
If I apply for the Spring semester, will I receive financial assistance?
We welcome applications for the Spring semester as well. However, please note that we do not generally offer AI positions (the most common form of financial support) to new students who begin their studies in the spring semester. Such students can apply for an AI position for the following Fall semester.
I have tried to submit the application, but it does not allow me to submit it. Why?
Please check to make sure you have included all the required information. Besides the Personal Information and Educational Background, you need to also give information about the three persons that will write your letters of recommendation. You have the choice of allowing them to submit the recommendation for you online or by regular mail. No matter what your choice is, you still need to fill out information about them.
If you have filled out all the information, you can submit your application. In order for your application to be submitted you need to pay the application fee. The system only accepts debit/credit cards.
If I am admitted and decide to defer my admission, can I do so?
Yes, you can request up to a two-year delay in your matriculation date without filing a new application. However, please note that you cannot defer any offer of financial support. If you defer one year and want to be reconsidered for funding for the following year, you need to announce our department by January 15 of the year in which you wish to matriculate by writing an email to the graduate secretary Jocelyn Karlan.
If admitted, which is the latest date when I can give an answer?
If you are admitted, you need to officially offer an answer whether you are planning to attend IU no later than April 15. However, we would appreciate an earlier reply, especially if you are awarded financial assistance because if you do not accept, we can offer financial support to other interested applicants.
How do I accept or decline an offer of admission?
Please notify the Department of French & Italian in writing as soon as you decide to accept or decline our offer of admission. You may do so by emailing our Graduate Secretary, Jocelyn Karlan, at fritgs @indiana.edu or by mailing us a note at the following address:
