Methods of Attaining Graduate Language Proficiency
French
Take the Graduate School Foreign Language Exam and earn a score of 53 or higher (out of 64 points). This exam is administered by the Bloomington Evaluation Services and Testing (BEST), phone: 855-1595. Format of the exam can be seen here.
Enroll in F492 and earn a grade of B or better. F491 is no longer a prerequisite for F492, although we recommend that students take the BEST exam to determine whether or not they are ready to go right into F492.
Enroll in a FRIT course taught in French at the 300-level or above (courses taught in English and F491 not included) and earn a grade of B or better. After completing the course, the student must ask the FRIT graduate secretary to send a memo to the student's major department.

Italian
Successfully complete the Italian reading proficiency exam administered by the Department of French and Italian in September and February. This is a translation exam graded on a pass/fail basis.
Enroll in M492 and earn a grade of B or better. M491 is the suggested preparation for M492.
Enroll in a FRIT course taught in Italian at the 300-level or above (courses taught in English and M491 not included) and earn a grade of B or better. After completing the course, the student must ask the FRIT graduate secretary to send a memo to the student's major department.
