Eugène Scribe and Gaston Leroux, Hugo and Mallarmé, Remy de Gourmont and Léon Bloy, Alain-Fournier and above all Maurice Leblanc, along with many others writing in the last decades of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century were fascinated, repelled or inspired by the bicycle, which also caught the imagination of many poster artists. This paper offers a light-hearted exploration of some of the implications of this passion for the vélocipède. Rosemary Lloyd is Rudy Professor of French Literature in the Department of French and Italian. (Lecture in English.)
