The Department of French and Italian Student-Faculty Forum Series presents a lecture by Eric MacPhailProfessor of French and Italian Like a Rock at Sea: Language Change and Historical Thought in the Renaissance
Friday, February 21, 2003
Professor Eric MacPhail of the Department of French & Italian will discuss the status of archaism and the question of linguistic usage in the European Renaissance. Debates on usage often raise the question of the autonomy or distinctness of the present and permit us to gauge the historical consciousness of an era. Prof. MacPhail will examine the authors Erasmus, Rabelais, Castiglione, and Montaigne as they react to the precepts of Horace, Quintilian and Aulus Gellius. The presentation will be followed by discussion and refreshments. If you have a disability and need assistance, special arrangements
can be made to accommodate most needs. Contact Isabel Piedmont at (812)
