Theresa Coletti is Professor of English at the University of Maryland, College Park. She is presently the Director of Graduate Studies in English and was for some time the Chair of the Department of English. A specialist in Medieval dramatic literature, she has been awarded the Martin Stevens Prize for the Best New Essay in Early Drama Studies by the Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society in 2002; an American Council on Education Fellowship; and research support from the American Council of Learned Societies, the University of Maryland Research Center of Arts and Humanities, and the American Association of University Women.

Professor Coletti’s study Naming the Rose: Eco, Medieval Signs, and Modern Theory (Cornell University Press, 1988) is widely regarded as the best interpretation of Umberto Eco’s prize-winning novel, The Name of the Rose, and was the first monograph on Eco published in English. She has written numerous articles on Medieval drama but has also found time in her impressive research program focused upon Medieval English literature to write several important articles on Eco’s second novel, Foucault’s Pendulum. She is also a contributor to the forthcoming Cambridge Companion to Umberto Eco.

Professor Coletti’s most recent book is Mary Magdalene and the Drama of Saints: Theatre, Gender, and Religion in Late Medieval England (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2004), a nominee for the Otto Grundler Prize.

Sponsors: Mary-Margaret Barr Koon Fund, Medieval Studies Institute, West European Studies, Comparative Literature, and the Dean of the Faculties
